Mills Park Centre: A 6 Green Star masterpiece
In an extremely rare and difficult move, the Mills Park Community Centre in Beckenham, Western Australia, achieved the honour of attaining a 6 star GBCA certification on its first attempt. The 24 ha centre, which boasts community piazza areas, skate parks and nature play areas as well as sporting facilities, gained this highly competitive and challenging achievement with the aid of energy-efficient mechanical and electrical services throughout Mill Park.

What goes into achieving a Green Star?
There are over 7 million square metres of Green Star certified projects in Australia, according to the GBCA. The Green Star rating system is a way for environmentally conscious buildings to gain recognition for lowering their impact on the environment and creating a positive and sustainable space, beyond what’s required by regulations.
There are five steps into becoming Green Star-approved: Registration, documentation, submission, assessment and certification. It’s a rigorous process so that only truly green buildings can gain a star.
When a building or project gains certification, there are six different levels of achievement they can be recognised for:
- 1 star: Minimum practice
- 2 stars: Average practice
- 3 stars: Good practice
- 4 stars: Best practice
- 5 stars: Australian excellence
- 6 stars: World leadership
