Smart technology continues to revolutionise almost every aspect of our lives and the Internet of Things (IoT) will no doubt play a major role in how switchboards evolve in the future.
A recent report predicts that smart connectivity of devices and objects indoors will develop markedly over the coming years.
The use of smart technology such as navigation and IoT indoors could be expected to grow exponentially.
Increased connectivity of things indoors
The Deloitte Global Technology Media and Telecommunications (TMT) Predictions report suggests that by 2022, at least one quarter of all human and machine uses of precision digital navigation will involve at last part of an indoor journey, versus less than 5 per cent in 2017.
Stuart Johnston, leader of Deloitte’s TMT practice, said that given we spend more than 90 per cent of our time indoors where we collectively use billions of objects, the use of smart technology such as navigation and IoT indoors could be expected to grow exponentially.
“Improvements in the accuracy of indoor navigation technology, an array of positioning data, improved analytical tools, indoor WiFi routers and supporting beacons are some technologies contributing to growth” said Mr Johnston.
Indoor smart technology offers significant opportunities in building and workplace design.
Switchboards in smart buildings and workplaces
Indoor smart technology offers significant opportunities in building and workplace design.
Deloitte’s Amsterdam building – ‘The Edge’ – has been described as the world’s most advanced building. Designed for maximum efficiency, a smartphone app allows staff to enjoy a range of highly personalised experiences and services based on their schedules – from finding a parking spot to adjusting light and temperature according to their preferences.
Switchboards of the future will likely be part of the IoT experience for occupants in many buildings. Home-based WiFi-enabled switchboards are already available that can do the same job as a conventional switchboard. These smart devices provide occupants with greater control over appliances, added convenience and energy cost savings.
